Tinnitus is very common, and in most cases it is not dangerous. It often shows up alongside hearing loss, so a full hearing evaluation is usually the first step in understanding it. Most people find it comes and goes with things like stress, fatigue, caffeine, or a quiet room at night, and it tends to be loudest when there is nothing else to listen to. Treating any underlying hearing loss frequently takes the edge off it, because the brain has real sound to focus on again. Ringing that starts suddenly, affects only one ear, or comes with dizziness or hearing changes is worth having looked at sooner rather than later.
